More Jobs, Less Pollution!
Did you know that a 75% national recycling rate would create nearly 1.5 million new jobs? That’s exactly what we found in an exciting new report called More Jobs, Less Pollution by GAIA in collaboration with the Teamsters, Blue Green Alliance, NRDC, and SEIU. Jobs that can be good and safe, with family-supporting wages.
Wow, that’s a lot of jobs!
And if you haven’t had a chance to see the new film called Story of Broke from GAIA co-founder Annie Leonard and the Story of Stuff project, it’s well worth 8 minutes! It describes how taxpayer money props up the “dinosaur economy” and why we should be demanding that public money supports the future we want to see.
So how do this report and the film link together? Here’s the deal: cities like Harrisburg, PA are going broke because incinerators are risky investments. Incinerators are the most expensive way to make energy and the most expensive way to handle waste. Yet a new report by GAIA called Burning Public Money for Dirty Energy documents lots of ways our government gives this expensive industry lots of tax breaks and taxpayer money that are intended for clean, renewable energy.
And now Congress is poised to make the situation worse with bills (HR 2250, HR 2681, HR 66) that would exempt many incinerators and cement kilns that burn wastes from the Clean Air Act and give new tax write offs. Earthjustice estimates the resulting pollution would cause up to 9,000 deaths every year. Not to mention that they would undermine recycling and jobs creation.
So please, join us in telling Congress NO to bills for dirty energy, and yes to zero waste. Take action now!
