Breaking News - NYC City Council Passes E-Waste Recycling Bill

Posted by Sophie Cardona

Breaking News

New York City – Feb 15th, 2008.

The City Council approved a bill on Wednesday that will make recycling of electronic waste mandatory in New York City starting in 2009. This groundbreaking municipal legislation would require that electronic manufacturers assume the cost of recycling discarded electronic equipment, an approach INFORM has consistently endorsed. INFORM staff provided testimony in support of the bill and urged the City Council to go one step further and add a disposal ban with civil penalties to the legislation. If this bill becomes law, New York City will become the first city in the nation to adopt an electronics recycling law and become a national model for other cities to emulate across the country.
