David Gottfried Presents AIA SF with a Plaque to Commemorate the USGBC's First Board Meeting

The USGBC, USGBC-NCC, AIA, and AIA SF were excited to celebrate both the LEED-CI Gold Certification of AIA SF's offices and to commemorate the USGBC's first board meeting, which was held at the AIA SF (and USGBC-NCC) offices at 130 Sutter Street in October of 1993. In a special ceremony during the AIA Convention week, USGBC's Founder David Gottfried presented the AIA SF with the LEED CI Gold Plaque and Don Rudy, President of AIA, presented a plaque to commemorate the USGBC Board's first meeting. David Gottfried reflected on the early days of the USGBC and its tremendous growth domestically and globally. He noted the importance of USGBC's committed volunteers and staff to furthering the vision of the USGBC. The Executive Committee of AIA, including the President and CEO, joined us for this celebration.

USGBC-NCC Silicon Valley Branch Celebrates First Birthday

The USGBC-NCC Silicon Valley Branch celebrated their one year birthday at Santa Clara University on Tuesday, May 12th. The main attraction was a Green Building Expo which gave participants an opportunity to network and learn about sustainable products and builders within the community. BOMA, IFMA, and Sustainable Silicon Valley partnered for this event and participated in the Expo.

Guests were given tours of the on site Solar Decathalon Projects (read more in the article below). These solar powered homes were designed and built by students at Santa Clara University's Department of Engineering. The project, developed in conjunction with the California College of the Arts, will compete in the national competition in Washington DC this fall.
USGBC-NCC Executive Director Dan Geiger and Silicon Valley Branch Chair Brandon Tinianov celebrated the event with a cake cutting ceremony and reflection on the past year. Dan commended the leadership of not only the branch Chair and Executive Committee, but also the branch membership. "The members have the vision to see what needs to be done, the courage to step forward, and the wisdom to do what's right."

Green Jobs: Join the Green Employers Council

USGBC-NCC is recruiting employers to participate in the Green Employers Council. Members help provide green-collar job opportunities for the Oakland Green Jobs Corps - a job training program providing "green pathways out of poverty" for young adults in Oakland. The Council consists of businesses and nonprofits working in the energy efficiency, renewable energy, and green building sectors in the Oakland/East Bay area. Current Green Employers Council Members include: Swinerton Builders, Sustainable Spaces and Solar City.

Employers will benefit by having access to a qualified, job-ready workforce, special recognition on the USGBC-NCC website, as well as high-profile media exposure through connection with the Oakland Green Jobs Corps. The program trains participants in skilled trades, carpentry, solar installation, energy efficiency, green construction, and in principles of environmental sustainability. Stipends may be available to employers interested in hiring a worker from this program.

This is a great opportunity for USGBC-NCC members to hire well trained workers and make a contribution to society at the same time. As Oakland Mayor Dellums said when he opened the historic launch of the Oakland Green Jobs Corps, "this is a very elegant idea - elegant in its simplicity, to fight pollution and fight poverty simultaneously."

Interested in becoming a Green Employer Council Member? Please visit the webpage or contact Ashleigh Talberth for more information.

California College Students Show the World How Living Green Isn't a Compromise

Team California Is Uniquely Poised to Challenge the Status Quo

Team California, the only competitor in the U.S. Department of Energy's 2009 Solar Decathlon hailing from the West Coast, is out to prove that aesthetics and engineering can work together to create an amazing living space. Combining the latest developments in green technology with their own high-end craft and artisanal skills, and taking into account California's incredible climate, the students are designing and building an 800-square-foot home that they hope will bring home first prize. All of the competing teams' houses will be on display October 8-18 on the National Mall in Washington DC. Read on...
