 Please register by August 31st.

Speakers:
David Knight, Principal - Monterey Energy Group
Larry Weingarten, Principal - Elemental Enterprises

Achieving net zero energy consumption is a balancing act between the design of the mechanical-electrical systems, the design of the building envelope, and the energy needs of the building's occupants.  David Knight and Larry Weingarten have pursued this balancing act throughout their careers in an impressive array of projects in a variety of ways.  Their combined experience with mechanical systems alone includes solar thermal, solar electric, geothermal, and other energy technologies.

David's net zero presentation will cover case studies of projects he has designed and the process used to calculate the energy required as well as options for providing solar energy production and new heating-cooling technologies that allow for efficient use of grid-tie solar electric systems. His results are simple, low maintenance, and surprisingly cost effective systems that can be relatively easily integrated into most new or existing residential projects.

Larry will give a short presentation on his experience in designing and building his own near-zero energy home and his subsequent expertise in solar, hot water, and thermal envelope design.

Many thanks to our generous sponsors!

About the Speakers:

David Knight founded the Monterey Energy Group, which specializes in mechanical engineering design, in 1982.  Since then he has designed over 5,000 residential mechanical systems and performed over 15,000 energy efficiency reports. His main areas of expertise include solar energy systems, radiant floor heating, and general energy efficiency.  This summer, the Monterey Energy Group has completed the mechanical design of over 40 net zero energy new homes. Before founding Monterey Energy Group, David was a solar energy instructor at Monterey Peninsula College where he developed and taught courses in solar and other alternative energy systems. Over the years he has given seminars for PG&E, California Energy Commission, California Association of Building Energy Consultants, the Radiant Panel Association, and the American Institute of Architects.

Larry Weingarten is a Design Engineer with Synergistic Building Technologies and is a member of the Board of Directors where he serves as Corporate Treasurer. He has been involved in hot water and energy related work since 1978, primarily through his company, Elemental Enterprises. Larry has developed a variety of tools and methods for maintaining water heaters and has co-authored a book on the topic. He has also co-authored articles on hot water, energy, and plumbing, and teaches on these subjects. Larry lives in a highly-efficient off-grid solar home he designed and built whose radiantly-heated wall systems and daylighting fenestration techniques represent the state of the art in near-zero energy homes.

Space is limited.  Please register for the event before August 31. Registration fee: $10 for NCC members, $15 for non-NCC members, $20 for non-members at the door.

Directions: Take Highway 1 to Moss Landing Road. There is also public parking at the Moss Landing Harbor District within walking distance (parking fee required payable at Harbor District).

In fact, its people just like you that help make the Chapter the premiere source for green building education, advocacy, and networking in our region. A great way to make a difference during this explosion of growth in green building is to contribute your passion and energy to the USGBC-NCC Monterey Bay Branch, which serves Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey Counties. We invite you to join our steering committee, join a subcommittee and help out with easy tasks before and at our events, or bring your creative ideas for 2009 education and networking events, and a willingness to help make them happen. Tell us your strengths and we'll find a role that's right for you.

Training for Transition: Building Resilient Communities for a Post-Carbon World

The Transition movement is a set of inspiring ideas for creating an attractive and enticing vision of how our communities could be. The converging crises of climate change and oil depletion and economic instability cannot be solved separately, and they cannot be solved with technological miracles, but only by lessening our dependence on fossil fuels. This doesn't mean a bleaker future. The heart of transition is the belief that if we engage with enough imagination and ingenuity to unlock the collective genius of our communities, we can choose a future that is more satisfying, just and sustainable than what we have now.

A special event will be held Friday, Oct. 23rd & Sunday, Oct. 25th from 9:30 - 5:30 pm with a special free, open-to-the-public Energy Decent Planning Session Oct. 23rd, 6 to 9pm at 26435 Carmel Rancho Blvd, Carmel.  The fee to attend is $195 before October 1st and $225 thereafter. To register, contact Deborah Lindsay.  Scholarships are available.

Participants in the training will: explore the opportunities for personal and social transformation presented by the challenges of peak oil, climate change and economic instability; learn the key concepts of the Transition model, including how to set up and foster successful Transition groups., Permaculture principles and community visioning; understand how to raise awareness of the need for transition through public talks and events; form contacts with other change leaders in your local area; and, establish a plan of action for yourself and your community.

Climate Action Day

Join forces with folks around the globe to demand regulation to reduce CO2 emissions to 350 ppm level by promoting a day of action on October 24th. Visit www.350.org for more info and find local climate action events in the Monterey County area.   You are encouraged to create your own action too!

Boston Architectural College Partners With BuildingGreen to  Offer Online Learning

Boston Architectural College sustainable design courses provide faculty-led, interactive, college-level instruction in a fully online format, which makes them available at any location in the world with internet access. The BAC sustainable design curriculum offers the opportunity to learn about the many ways in which buildings interact with the natural environment and the choices available to make that interaction positive. Courses can be taken individually or as part of the sustainable design certification program (GCSD). Many of the courses have been endorsed and are included in the USGBC's Education Providers Program. For more information, or to register, go to the BAC Website.
