Speaker:
Daniel Silvernail, Architect
Daniel Silvernail is an ecologist by education and architect by profession. In 1996 he was exposed to the California straw building movement and the use of straw bales as a building material. Offering environmentally-positive qualities including low embodied energy, super-insulation, and an alternative to the use of lumber he immediately was drawn into the movement, designing his first straw bale residential project in 1997 and accepting induction to the Advisory Board of CASBA (the California Straw Building Association) in 2003.
Over the years of educating both building professionals and laypersons to the ecological advantages of the technology, he realized that simply building with bales is only a single aspect of the picture if the building is to be successful from a sustainable perspective, that, as builders and designers, if we are not mindful of applying solar design principles we've really only delivered "half the goods" to the environment in terms of sustainable practice.
Join Daniel in a presentation of his unique perspective on the subject, one which he calls "Straw Building and the Principles of Passive Solar Design: A Primer".

Now is a great time to volunteer with the USGBC-NCC! In fact, its people just like you that help make the Chapter the premiere source for green building education, advocacy, and networking in our region. A great way to make a difference during this explosion of growth in green building is to contribute your passion and energy to the USGBC-NCC Monterey Bay Branch, which serves Santa Cruz, San Benito and Monterey Counties. We invite you to join our steering committee, join a subcommittee and help out with easy tasks before and at our events, or bring your creative ideas for 2010 education and networking events, and a willingness to help make them happen. Tell us your strengths and we'll find a role that's right for you. |
Sponsor the Monterey Bay Branch
Supporting the Monterey Bay Branch is a great way to increase your company's visibility with our members and attendees. Sponsorship levels start as low as $250. Contact Jordan Daniels, 831-359-2584 or Stewart Wadsworth 831-332-0612 to find out more.
Branch Advocacy Update
On September 2nd, the USGBC Northern California Chapter (NCC) Green Schools Advocate and Residential Green Building Committee Co-chair updated our branch about greening schools and residential buildings from both a National and Northern California Chapter perspective. They stressed that the point of green schools advocacy is "A" to affect legislation and codes; and "B" education and outreach. The "rules for advocates" was presented, which included our position to not sell LEED or any other green school standard. The USGBC is serving as the facilitator for the Alliance and is working with its members to identify issues and challenges on which they want to focus, and to find resources to further their cause. The USGBC is working on a tool-kit to instruct project teams on how to achieve and track credits, so that cash-strapped school districts can better afford to achieve LEED for Schools certification. It will be released in 2010.
The Green Schools and Residential committees are different than the others in that they have alliances with other organizations such as CHPS, Build It Green and NAHB. The USGBC's Green Home Guide provides educational content on how everyone can create a green home. At West Coast Green, the Residential Committee will talk about its strategic plan in a salon setting.
Ana Maria Rebelo presented the Santa Cruz County Green Schools Program. In order to participate in the green schools program, students need to volunteer on community programs such as beach/rivers or watershed cleanups and marking storm drains throughout the county. The program has five different presentations on various environmental areas; each presentation is tweaked depending on the class and includes training for teachers and custodians. In the near future, they are planning to start the green business certification for schools.
Recent and Upcoming City and County Events relevant to Advocacy:
- Sept. 21 - USGBC-NCC MBB and AMBAG spoke to the Hollister City Council about the importance of developing a green building policy.
- Sept. 29 a.m.- County of Santa Cruz Board of Supervisors will consider Planning Department's proposed green building program (residential). See: County of Santa Cruz's website on 9/25 for agenda.
- Sept. 29 after 4:30pm - City of Salinas Council - public hearing regarding the City's status in meeting the United Nations Urban Environmental Accord. Check City website before the meeting to verify the agenda item. Attendance is encouraged.
For more information, or to join the advocacy committee, contact Sharon Sarris (government) or Liz Cordero (schools). The next meeting is Wednesday, October 7th, 4:30-5:30 pm at Moss Landing Marine Labs.
Training for Transition: Building Resilient Communities for a Post-Carbon World
The Transition movement is a set of inspiring ideas for creating an attractive and enticing vision of how our communities could be. The converging crises of climate change and oil depletion and economic instability cannot be solved separately, and they cannot be solved with technological miracles, but only by lessening our dependence on fossil fuels. This doesn't mean a bleaker future. The heart of transition is the belief that if we engage with enough imagination and ingenuity to unlock the collective genius of our communities, we can choose a future that is more satisfying, just and sustainable than what we have now.
A special event will be held Friday, Oct. 23rd & Sunday, Oct. 25th from 9:30 - 5:30 pm with a special free, open-to-the-public Energy Decent Planning Session Oct. 23rd, 6 to 9pm at 26435 Carmel Rancho Blvd, Carmel. The fee to attend is $195 before October 1st and $225 thereafter. To register, contact Deborah Lindsay. Scholarships are available.
Participants in the training will: explore the opportunities for personal and social transformation presented by the challenges of peak oil, climate change and economic instability; learn the key concepts of the Transition model, including how to set up and foster successful Transition groups., Permaculture principles and community visioning; understand how to raise awareness of the need for transition through public talks and events; form contacts with other change leaders in your local area; and, establish a plan of action for yourself and your community.
