Virginia's kids need relationship reality, not marriage propaganda
|
Just in time for Valentines Day, 14 words requiring local schools to teach children to get married are poised to enter Virginia state law. An amendment proposed to the Family Life Education section of the Code of Virginia says that the state board of education must ensure that kindergartners through high school seniors get lessons on the "benefits, challenges, responsibilities, and value of marriage for men, women, children, and communities." What's wrong with that? Think about the 30% of VA children who live in unmarried homes. What will the schools be telling children about their own families? And how about schoolkids who identfy as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgendered, who are questioning their sexuality, or who might come out some time later in life? What will the schools be telling them about their ability to form a family? (Remember, VA's constitution bans same sex marriage and legal recognition of unmarried relationships!) Then consider the 2,783,000 single Virginians. That's nearly half (45%) of all VA adults - and 60% of African-Americans! Over 134,000 Virginians live with their unmarried partners. Don't we face enough singlism and marital status discrimination without every kid being taught that married is best? |
