CALLS NEEDED TODAY! TELL SENATE LEADER STEINBERG TO REJECT ATTEMPTS TO GUT ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS IN BUDGET NEGOTIATIONS   The California Legislature is considering voting on a measure today that would exempt major highway projects from the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) in hopes of getting Governor Schwarzenegger to approve a new state budget proposal. We need you to tell them no!   CEQA, (pronounced "SEE-qua") is California's premier environmental law. It requires a full investigation of the potential negative environmental effects of proposed projects and, where those effects are found to be significant, requires that actions are taken to avoid or mitigate the negative effects.   If this CEQA-slashing proposal becomes law we would be left in the dark about the potential environmental consequences of the exempted projects. Is there a way to meet the same objective with less global warming pollution? Will the project pollute a nearby stream? Would it cut off a key corridor for endangered species? Without CEQA, we wouldn't know the answer and we couldn't do anything to make it better.   It's not just a question of protecting the environment. CEQA helps us make smarter financial choices. Would the air pollution from a proposed freeway project lead to higher hospital costs for asthma and other lung and heart diseases? If the water in the stream is polluted, how much will it cost to make it drinkable again?   We can't strengthen our economy by making more people sick from air and water pollution.   We can't move to a green economy if we revoke our basic environmental protections.   It's time to remind the Legislature that we need to stimulate the economy in ways that advance our environmental and public health goals. We can do it, but not if we exempt projects from CEQA.   Please call Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg at (916) 651-4006.
