May 19, 2013 Subject: Please Co-Sponsor The Complete America's Great Trails Act (HR 1912) Dear Representative, As one of the 75 million Americans that hike, I care deeply about America’s trails. Trails like the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, Continental Divide, and brand-new Arizona National Scenic Trail, are world-renowned examples our nation’s commitment to protect special places where I like to hike and ensure natural, pristine hiking experiences today and for future generations. Many of our treasured National Scenic Trails traverse tracts of privately owned land. For example, more than 275 miles of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail lies on extremely narrow easements through private lands. Many of these private lands complicate the duties of land managers and restrict public access to popular recreational opportunities. The Complete America’s Great Trails Act (HR 1912) offers a simple, market-based and fiscally responsible opportunity to bridge gaps in our National Scenic Trails system. HR 1912 grants tax credits to private landowners who donate conservation easements to certified National Scenic Trails. During these challenging financial times, it is important to mention that HR 1912 requires no direct spending from the federal government, provides a significant tax break to hard-working land owners, and helps ensure that America continues to benefit from our incredible trail resources. This forward-thinking bipartisan legislation is an important tool that would allow our federal government to meet growing public demand for the recreational, economic and spiritual benefits provided by increased connectivity in America’s National Scenic Trails system.
