First Class Breakfast Initiative - 2011
The Maryland First Class Breakfast Initiative is a project aimed at combating hunger and obesity through increased participation in school breakfast. The initiative is providing resources to a targeted group of 21 schools which include up to $7,500 in grants for each school to implement an alternative breakfast model and a comprehensive, step-by-step Guide to Increasing School Breakfast toolkit funded by Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States. In addition, all Maryland schools were invited to participate in the "Breakfast Challenge Grant" funded by the Wal-Mart Foundation which will award $8,000 in prize grants to the three schools that increase participation in their school breakfast program the most in the coming year.
