Writing and NCTE’s National Day on Writing

Tell them how important writing is to you and your students.

Ask them to support a resolution to make October 20, 2009, the National Day on Writing.

While you can use the model letter below as-is, we strongly encourage you to at least edit it. There’s a spot at the end of the paragraph right after the bullets for you to add in sentences to this effect: In my classroom (in my school, in my life as a citizen, etc.) (your story or a point you want to make about writing). Dear Member of Congress

People in every walk of life, in every kind of work, and at every age write more than ever before for personal, professional, and civic purposes. Newly developing technologies expand the possibilities for composing in multiple media and for speaking to wider audiences than ever before. This communication contributes to our academic achievement and rigor, to development of business and commerce, and to our global economy and community.

In light of the significance of writing in our national life, I am writing to ask your support for a simple resolution that will come your way soon to recognize October 20, 2009, as the National Day on Writing. The National Day on Writing will 
 
*  celebrate the foundational place of writing in Americans' personal, professional, and civic lives;
*  point to the importance of writing instruction and practice at every grade level and in every subject area from preschool through university;
*  emphasize the lifelong process of learning to write and composing for different audiences, purposes, and occasions;
*  honor the use of the full range of media for composing; and
*  encourage Americans to write and enjoy and learn from the writing of others.

My experience convinces me that writing is the quintessential 21st century literacy.

As more and more people deem writing essential and influential in their work and as young people lead the way in composing through new forms of digital media, we must recognize the scope and range of writing done by the American people. Please affirm this centrality of writing by supporting the National Day on Writing through co-sponsorship and through your vote.
