Rabbi Arik Ascherman arrested in Sheikh Jarrah
Dear Supporter,
We are writing to let you know that Rabbi Arik Ascherman, Executive Director of Rabbis for Human Rights in Israel, was arrested earlier today at the weekly demonstration in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem.
As you may know, several hundred Israelis and Palestinians (sometimes thousands) demonstrate in Sheikh Jarrah every Friday afternoon to peacefully protest the discriminatory treatment of Palestinians in that Arab neighborhood who have been evicted from their homes or who are under threat of eviction in order to clear the way for Jewish settlers.
According to Ha'aretz, 16 demonstrators were arrested and 4 were lightly injured. We don't have any more details, but we will send updates when we know more. We hope and pray that Rabbi Ascherman will be released shortly.
Let's show Rabbi Ascherman that we support him and the work of RHR. Please consider making a donation so RHR can continue to stand up for all those whose rights have been infringed, Jew and Arab.
Sincerely,
Steven Gerber
Executive Director
