Jewish tradition believes that a just and open court system is integral to a fair society. One of the first laws of the Torah concerns the establishment of a fair court system. Due process is also a cornerstone of American rights and values.
But late last December, Congress passed legislation that could severely limit these rights. The National Defense Authorization Act specifically authorized the use of indefinite military detention without trial of people suspected of being associated with Al Qaeda. Suspected--not even convicted. Supporters of this provision stated that their intention was to allow even people captured on American soil to be detained without trial, both non-citizens and citizens.
We must act now to reverse this course. Senator Mark Udall and Representative Adam Smith have introduced legislation to prevent the possibility of people captured on U.S. soil from being detained indefinitely without trial. We need as many Members of Congress and Senators as possible to co-sponsor this legislation if there is a hope of repealing this dangerous new law. Contact your Member of Congress and Senators today to ask them to support Senator Udall and Representative Smith's bills.
