Manatees Threatened By Local Political Pressure In Crystal River Need Your Help

The Issue:
Last summer, we asked you to provide comments to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service), which had proposed a much needed rule to protect manatees from harassment and high speed watercraft in Crystal River, Florida by creating a manatee refuge in Kings Bay. Since then, a full scale propaganda campaign has been launched, and sadly, endorsed by the local government (who originally supported these protections) and Chamber of Commerce, in an effort to prevent the Service from implementing this much needed and justified rule. The Service is likely to publish a final rule this month, and it is important that they hear from you once again -- to remind them of the science received during the public comment period, which provided further confirmation that this proposed rule, in its entirety, is both justified and necessary to uphold the Service's legal charge of protecting manatees. Please take a moment to e-mail a letter to Service officials.
