Act Now to Save Safety Net Programs & End Corporate Tax Breaks!

Governor Schwarzenegger released his revised budget proposal on May 14th, relying heavily on cuts to critical health and human services programs to close the state's $17.9 billion budget gap, while at the same time authorizing an additional $2.4 billion in tax breaks for large corporations!

The Governor's proposal:

  • Eliminates CalWORKs, the state's primary job support program for low-income families.
  • Limits services and increases co-payments in the Medi-Cal and Healthy Families programs.
  • Cuts county mental health services by 60%.
  • Elminates full-scope Medi-Cal for lawful immigrants here less than five years, the Cash Assistance Programs for Immigrants (CAPI), the California Food Assistance Program (CFAP) and Recent Non-Citizen Entrants program in CalWORKs.

Taken together these cuts will disproportionately harm communities of color, denying critical health services and cash support for basic necessities like food and housing.

This latest budget proposal takes away the little support that California families receive to recover from the economic downturn, while allowing big corporations to get away with paying less to help maintain our state's public infrastructure. Download and send in this letter to the Governor and legislative leaders TODAY. Tell them to say "no" to corporate tax breaks and "yes" to a real recovery plan for California's families.
