The New ¡Denuncia! 2008 Podcast
We are excited to bring you the new ¡Denuncia! 2008 podcast, a weekly audio resource that will accompany this year's Human Rights Abuse Documentation campaign. Each week you will be able to meet and hear the voices of some our abuse documenters as they recount their experiences interacting with their community, along with retelling some of the testimonies they have encountered during the campaign so far. Our first episode, hosted by !Denuncia! 2008's campaign coordinator, Yaya Ruiz, , will feature the personal trials and triumphs of Clarisa Flores and Carmen Preciado, two outstanding Border Action Human Rights Promoters, Abuse Documenters, and long time members of the organization. The podcast will be available each week on our website.

Francisco Rivera's Daily Memorial and "Daily Trial Updates Blog"
The retrial of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Nicholas Corbett, accused of killing the young Francisco Dominguez-Rivera, while crossing the desert near Naco in January of 2007, is scheduled to start on October 21st. Border Action will have a memorial in front of the courthouse every day of the trial to honor the life of Francisco, who was saving money while working in the U.S. to build a new family home for his parents. . We'd love to see you there to support Francisco's family, along with helping us renew our message that this case unfortunately does not stand alone, and is part of a broader need for better training, more accountability and oversight within the Border Patrol, and that agents must be held accountable for their actions.
We expect the trial to last for roughly two weeks, and during that time you will be able to follow the daily proceedings in a special blog written by Katie O'Connor, our Program and Grants Coordinator. The blog can be found on our website starting October 21st.

The Not-So-Easy Path to Legal Immigration
An immigration chart recently appeared in Reason magazine. For those of you that have been confronted with the frequent question, "why don't they just enter legally like my parents did?" -this chart offers a great visual answer. The assumption is always that you will qualify to obtain a visa if you apply in the first place, but is it really that simple? The chart answers these and other questions, along with clearly outlining the numerous steps one must take to be admitted into the system. Two essential elements that predict a person's chance of citizenship eligibility can be concluded from this chart: having family in the U.S., or, possessing an extraordinary skill or degree of education; and even then, it can take anywhere from 6-28 years to become a citizen.
