Supporter,

It's been a busy week since our last update. In spite of the disappointing finale in the Border Patrol murder trial, you can read how border communities in Cochise County are exposing Border Patrol and other human rights violations. The work of these and other border communities doesn't stay just on the border or even Arizona, read below how the U.S.-Mexico Border and Immigration Task Force is gearing up for trip to D.C. to meet with members of Congress and hopefully the new Administration's transition team. And back at home, Border Action just keeps growing and community organizing keeps getting stronger -we hope you can join us for the inauguration of two new Human Rights Committees in Pirtleville and Sierra Vista! There's more, but I'll let you read on...

In spite of Border Patrol Murder Mistrial,
AZ Border Communities Release Evidence of More Agency Abuses

Douglas, AZ - Even though the Tucson jurors in this week's conclusion of murder trial against a Cochise County Border Patrol agent could not arrive at a decision, local residents of the small towns on the Arizona border anxiously awaited a guilty verdict. In the small border town of Douglas, Arizona the ratio of Border Patrol agents to local residents is 1 for every 28 people. Local residents in this region have agents for neighbors, married into their family, and as friends. Yet, familiarity has not made the community blind to Border Patrol's need for greater oversight and accountability.

A new Cochise County-focused report was released today shows that at 39%, Border Patrol is the most often cited agency for human rights violations in the county and that 50% of the people reporting the alleged violations are U.S. citizens. The report, which includes approximately three-dozen incidents naming the Border Patrol, U.S. Customs, local police and sheriffs, employers, the school district, and a local border vigilante, illustrates incidents of unlawful detention, harassment, destruction of private property, and even the targeting of Border Action members and staff.

Unprecedented Border-Wide Coalition Presents New Vision for Border Policy to New Congress and Administration

On November 19th, an unprecedented border wide coalition of law enforcement, elected officials, faith and business leaders, community organizations and service providers will be in Washington, D.C. to announce a comprehensive set of recommendations for reducing civil and human rights violations and improving community security in the border region. The report - "Effective Border Policy: Security, Responsibility and Human Rights" - is the result of a collaboration sponsored by the Border Action Network and the Border Network for Human Rights called the US/Mexico Border and Immigration Task Force. The over 60 concrete and sensible recommendations in the report supply a clear roadmap for federal policy makers, as well as community advocates and faith leaders, to improve the security of border communities while supporting the need for national comprehensive immigration reform that includes effective, responsible border policy.

With the support of the National Immigration Forum, the Task Force delegation will hold a press conference to release the report, two congressional briefings, meet with national advocacy organizations as well as meet with key Congressional offices and committees over the span of two days. The report will be viewable at www.borderaction.org on Wednesday, November 19th.
