US-Mexico Border & Immigration Task Force Meets with White House & DHS

Last week the US-Mexico Border and Immigration Task Force returned to Washington, D.C. to meet with new Department of Homeland Security and White House staff as well as members of Congress and key committees. The group delivered a new document entitled "Accountability, Community Security and Ports of Entry: 2009 Policy Priorities for the US-Mexico Border."  Jennifer Allen, Border Action's director and member of the Task Force explains "The new administration has demonstrated remarkable openness and accessibility. There is a new willingness to look at how border policy impacts, positively and negatively, border communities and migrants. Our goal is to continue to talk with the administration and to keep the pressure on for greater accountability and oversight of border enforcement."

Report on our Annual General Assembly
Saturday, April 18, 2009

Border Action Network leaders from across the state gathered at the El Pueblo Neighborhood Center in Tucson on Saturday, April 18th to discuss how we should be part of the national effort to push for comprehensive immigration and border policy reform this year. The group evaluated our work in 2008 and charted a course for 2009-2010. Nearly 125 of our leaders from Human Rights Committees, Human Rights Promoters, Board of Directors from Tucson, Nogales, Douglas, Pirtleville, Sierra Vista, Prescott and Flagstaff  participated in this important annual planning meeting! After analyzing the current political climate, members prioritized the 3 political principles--out of our entire list of 12 political principles, that they found most relevant to the year ahead.

The results are:

1) Permanent Residency
2) Family Unity
3) Workers Rights

We would like to thank Senator Jorge Luis García and South Tucson City Council Member Carlos Salas for attending and speaking to us about the importance of and impact organized communities can have on their elected officials and how communities continue to play a positive role in the debate for immigration reform.

National Policy Update

As our 100-Day countdown for just and humane immigration reform comes to an end (only 6 days to go), we take a moment to update you on the current state of immigration. We saw a new movement come to life after President Obama announced he will push for comprehensive immigration reform this year.

HR 2076

Exciting news!  Last week Representative Raul Grijalva (AZ-7) introduced "HR 2076, The Border Security and Responsibility Act of 2009".

287(g) Agreements

Arizona is now one of the leading states with a total of eight 287(g) agreements. It is not surprising, since Sheriff Arpaio has long been known for his ethically dubious actions in law enforcement due to the 287(g) agreement with Maricopa County.
