Thank you again to all who loaded bus, van, and car, traveling from Douglas, Bisbee, Green Valley, Nogales, Tucson and Phoenix to participate in the first Day of Action at the Arizona State legislature!  With over 50 people representing nine organizations from across Arizona-we had long-time lobbyists congratulating us on the size and turnout of the group!  Needless to say, the Day of Action made a huge impact. Participants met with state lawmakers from the Senate and the House, both Democrat and Republican, urging them to lead the state of Arizona out of the current economic crisis and negativity by promoting a pro-active platform for economic health, community security, immigrant integration and rights protections. Check out our multimedia coverage of the event to hear from some the participants, view footage of the press conference, and hear first hand from Representative Daniel Patterson (D, D-29 Tucson) the importance of  talking to your State legislators.

Arizona Legislature Again Seeks to Criminalize Day Laborers, HB2355 passes the House Cow
Tuesday, May 19, 2009

The Arizona legislature is hoping that the third time is the charm when it comes to criminalizing day laborers and their employers. A $3 million deficit did not distract House lawmakers on Tuesday, May 19th from approving a bill, HB2355, which would charge people looking for work and workers on the streets with a misdemeanor "criminal trespass".

If the bill sounds awkwardly written and dubiously constitutional, it is.  In 2007, a similar bill passed the state House and Senate only to be vetoed by then-Governor Napolitano.  In 2008, the bill passed the House but died in the Senate.

Momentum Keeps Building for Immigration Reform
Wednesday, May 20, 2009

Yesterday, May 20th, four (yes, four!) notable events indicate that momentum continues to build in Washington to debate immigration reform this year.  President Obama announced that he is inviting members of Congress to a summit at the White House on June 8th to discuss reforming our nation's immigration policies. Senators Menendez (D-NJ), Gillibrand, (D-NY), Kennedy (D-MA), and Schumer (D-NY) introduced the Reuniting Families Act, legislation that would resolve family immigration backlogs, recapture unused visas, and promote timely reunification of immigrant families.

We won't forget: Esequiel Hernandez
Wednesday, May 20, 2009

On May 20, 1997, 18-year-old Esequiel Hernandez came home from school and hiked onto his family's isolated property on the Texas-Mexico border to graze his herd of 45 goats. Hernandez, a high-school student with no criminal record, dreamt of becoming a U.S. Marine or park ranger. Like most of the other residents of tiny Redford, Texas, Hernandez frequently carried a gun, occasionally firing it into the air to scare off animals that bothered his goats.

Unbeknownst to Hernandez or the 90 other residents of his town, U.S. Marines were stationed along the town's border to patrol for drug smugglers from Mexico.

In Memory: Border Human Rights Champion Roberto Martinez
Wednesday, May 20, 2009

SAN DIEGO [MAY 20] - Roberto Martinez, a lifelong Chicano civil and human rights advocate and former director of the US-Mexico Border Program of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) in San Diego, passed away this morning in the presence of his immediate family.  He was 72 years old.
Roberto was a fifth generation Chicano who witnessed blatant discrimination and racial intolerance as a young man.  He became a prominent advocate for migrant communities in the late 1970s and early 1980s and worked with several organizations in order to confront law enforcement abuse of authority.

Members of Border Task Force present border enforcement recommendations

On May 20th, the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Immigration held a hearing
about border issues. The hearing demonstrated that the Committee chair, Senator Schumer (D-NY), and other committee
members are ready for immigration reform this year and are working to find
meaningful solutions for border security. While there were good speakers on the panel, including El Paso County Sheriff Richard Wiles and Eagle Pass, TX Mayor Chad Foster, Arizona's representation fell to former- Arizona Congressman-turned-radio-talk show host, JD Hayworth, who is neither from the border region nor familiar with its complexities.
