Tell the Senate Appropriations Committee to Vote NO on SB1308 & SB1309!

Urgent Arizona Action Alert: 14th Amendment Bills

On Tuesday, February 22, the Arizona Senate Appropriations Committee will vote on SB1308 and SB1309. Though these bills did not pass the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday, February 7th due to a lack of support, the bills have been reassigned in an attempt to override any opposition!

These two measures would not only deny citizenship to children of undocumented parents and try to force the Supreme Court to review the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, but would also create an “interstate compact” with other states recognizing one another’s new state-determined citizenship. Please tell the Senate Appropriations Committee to Vote NO on SB1308 and SB1309!

SB 1309 – ARIZONA CITIZENSHIP
Primary Sponsor: Sen. Gould (R-3) - pictured left

This bill creates a new “Arizona Citizenship”, which can only be obtained if 1) a person is born or naturalized in the US, 2) a lawful Arizona resident and 3) subject to the jurisdiction of the U.S.  The bill defines “subject to the jurisdiction of the US” as someone who has at least 1 parent who is 1) a US citizen or national who owes no allegiance to another country, or 2) an immigrant who has permanent lawful residence status, or 3) a person who does not have citizenship or nationality in any other country. This means that if neither of your parents have legal immigration status in the U.S. you will not be granted Arizona Citizenship.

SB 1308– INTERSTATE COMPACT; BIRTH CERTIFICATES
Primary Sponsor: Sen. Gould (R-3) - pictured left

This bill authorizes the Governor to sign an agreement with other states so that they can make a distinction in peoples birth records that identifies whether a person born in the state is “subject to the jurisdiction of the US” (as defined in SB 1309) and a person who is not.
