SB1280 CONCEALING; HARBORING OR SHIELDING ALIENS (more info)

SB1280 makes it a class 5 felony to knowingly or recklessly conceal, harbor or shield from detection or attempt to conceal, harbor or shield from detection in any place—i.e., building or means of transportation, any person who is not lawfully in this state. This bill is vague and overreaching, in that anyone—from landlords who unknowingly rent to undocumented persons, an employee who offers a coworker a ride home, or a U.S. citizen husband with a wife who is undocumented could be portrayed as “attempting to harbor and conceal undocumented persons” and charged with a felony.

Dear Senate Rules Committee Member,

I urge you to vote NO on SB1280 “Concealing; Harboring or Shielding Aliens”! Immigration and someone’s immigration status is complicated; SB1280 will only make matters worse. This bill does not discern between criminal activity and regular people going about their daily lives, running the risk of criminalizing someone who is driving an immigrant child to school, shares their home with a loved one who’s immigration application is one of the tens of thousands caught in the backlog, or a co-worker who participates in a carpool. Yes, we need to urgently overhaul our failed immigration system. And the President and Congress are gearing up to do it. In the meantime, band-aids by the state of Arizona that risk causing more harm to our state are not the solution. Please, vote no on SB1280.
