Just months after he was officially recognised as the 11th Panchen Lama - one of Tibet's most important religious leaders - Gedhun and his family disappeared. He was just six years old. On 25 April 2011, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima will turn 23 - it will be the 17th birthday he will have spent in detention.

Dear Vice Minister,
Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama, and his family have been missing for 17 years. This year the Panchen Lama will turn 23, and Tibetans, Tibet Supporters, and Buddhists all over the world are deeply concerned about his wellbeing.
In March 2010, Tibet's Chinese-appointed Governor, Padma Choling, told reporters that “Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his family are now living a good life as ordinary citizens in Tibet.”(1). Without evidence this statement remains empty and we demand you prove that it is true.
A number of human rights mechanisms including the UN Committee Against Torture, the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, as well as the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, have called for his whereabouts to be revealed.
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the Chinese government’s unyielding secrecy about the Panchen Lama’s wellbeing and demand that you give proof of his whereabouts immediately.
