ABOUT THIS CAMPAIGN September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows is honored to share with our friends and allies the work of LaOnf
- an extraordinary network of Iraqi peace activists who are building a
nonviolent movement for a free, stable and peaceful Iraq.
WHAT IS LAONF?
LaOnf (an Arabic word that roughly
translates to "non-violence") is a network formed in 2006 by Iraqi
activists. LaOnf joins together Iraqi civil society organizations
to create and support nonviolent strategies to oppose occupation,
terrorism and corruption in Iraq. In a little over two years
LaOnf has grown into a national network of over 100 Iraqi
organizations, including student groups, unions, women's groups, and
humanitarian organizations that form LaOnf chapters in every
governorate (state) of Iraq, with a democratically elected decision
making structure on the governorate and national level. In 2007,
42 LaOnf member organizations created a week of coordinated nonviolent
actions that took place in 10 of Iraq's 18 governorates.
The next LaOnf week of nonviolence is planned for early October,
2008.
You can take part by attending or signing up to host a DVD
screening of the documentary video "Mesalla: Activists in Iraq,"
directed by filmmaker and activist Alberto Arce. "Mesalla"
chronicles the 2007 week of nonviolent action organized by LaOnf
activists in Iraqi Kurdistan. These DVD screenings are the first
stage in our campaign to build international solidarity for LaOnf.
The International Solidarity Campaign for LaOnf is a joint initiative
of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, Voices for Creative
Nonviolence, Un Ponte Per and NoVA.
