Condemn the Coup: Cosponsors Needed

Allies in Congress have unveiled a new resolution condemning the lethal coup in Honduras.  House Resolution 630, introduced by Representatives Bill Delahunt, Jim McGovern, and Jose Serrano, echoes the resounding demands of thousands of Hondurans, the international community, and organizations like Witness for Peace: that President Zelaya be immediately reinstated as the legitimate leader and that the Obama Administration cut off all non-humanitarian assistance to Honduras until that time.    If this resolution gains enough cosponsors, it will place unprecedented pressure on the Obama Administration to make clear its unequivocal support for the Honduran people's right to exercise their democratic will.   Please send the letter below to urge your representative to co-sponsor House Resolution 630 today.

February 09, 2010 Subject: Dear Representative, I write today with urgent concern about the grave situation in Honduras provoked by the illegal military coup of June 28. I ask that you join your colleagues today in co-sponsoring House resolution 630, which condemns the coup and calls for the reinstatement of democracy in Honduras. The resolution, introduced by Representatives Delahunt, McGovern, and Serrano, correctly supports the reinstatement of President Manuel Zelaya as the legitimate leader of Honduras and calls on the Obama Administration to take measures to hasten Zelaya's return to power. I am pleased that the Obama Administration has condemned the anti-democratic military coup and that some U.S. military aid to the coup regime has been frozen. Yet, more must be done to show the U.S.’s unequivocal support for democracy in Honduras. While President Obama has called for Zelaya's reinstatement, Secretary of State Clinton has been unwilling to do so when questioned by the media. The Obama Administration should make clear its support for the legitimacy of Honduras's elected president by calling in a unified and explicit manner for the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of Zelaya. While the U.S. Embassy in Honduras has announced a suspension of $16.5 million in military aid to the coup regime, this remains but a portion of the U.S.'s non-humanitarian assistance to Honduras. To hasten the reinstatement of democratic order, the U.S. should immediately suspend all non-humanitarian assistance. The tense situation in Honduras is growing critical. A respected national Honduran human rights organization (COFADEH) has documented 1,161 human rights violations in the coup regime's first 17 days, including over 1000 arbitrary detentions, widespread repression of independent media, dozens of physical attacks from security personnel, and four politically-motivated murders. The United States urgently needs to join the international community in decisively supporting the safety and rights of all Hondurans. Please act today by co-sponsoring House resolution 630.
