Help Pass Complete Streets Legislation!

In too many of New York's cities, towns, and suburbs, poorly designed roads make it dangerous to get around on foot or by bike. That's why advocates are working overtime to help assure the passage of a state Complete Streets law (A-8587B), which would direct the New York State Department of Transportation to consider pedestrian and bicycle accommodations in the planning and development of all roads and transportation facilities receiving state or federal funds.  This important legislation will:

  • Make our streets safer for pedestrians, cyclists, transit users, and drivers;
  • Help protect senior citizens and children, both of whom face heightened risks while walking and cycling;
  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
  • And strengthen downtowns and main streets.

The State Senate overwhelmingly passed this bill in June. But the bill has yet to make it out of the State Assembly and is stuck in the Assembly's Ways and Means Committee. With state legislators returning to Albany in late summer, it's critical that New Yorkers make their voices heard and get this bill moving -- this may be the last chance to pass Complete Streets in 2010!
