Remember SB 1070, the draconian Arizona immigration law that blew up on the national scene two years ago? With copycat legislation now in five other states, it goes to the Supreme Court on Tuesday, and we plan to be there with the Jewish community and others in solidarity with immigrants.
Also join us and your fellow community members next Friday, to protest Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)'s "community" roundtable. The "Secure Communities" deportation program is a threat to public safety and has led to an all-time high of deportations and incarcerations, and should be ended, not mended.
That's why we'll be supporting Council Member Phil Mendelson's Immigration Detainer Compliance Amendment Act of 2011, which would make our communities safer for immigrants and non-immigraints alike, the following Friday.

Corporate donation ban initiative needs your help!
We helped DC Public Trust collect almost 10,000 signatures on Primary Day for the petition to get a November referendum to ban corporate cash in DC politics. But, ten weeks away from the deadline, we still need about 13,000 more!
This is our chance to start reversing the disturbing increase of corruption and pay-to-play politics in DC. We'll be working with DC Public Trust to get the signatures we need to get this referendum on the ballot in November. We need your help.
How to get involved: JUFJ and DC Public Trust are organizing canvassing days at farmer's markets, festivals, parades, and other events, including the Ward 5 At-Large Primary on May 15th. Tikkun Leil Shabbat, our social justice minyan, will be doing a canvas on May 20th. We're planning a clergy day of action, and other opportunities for congregations to help out, so if you're a rabbi, please contact us! For more on this initiative, email Katie at katie@jufj.org or call (202) 408-1423 ext. 5 to get involved!

Improvement or gentrification in Anacostia?
Is art driving gentrification in Anacostia? DCentric considered this question on Tuesday, posting a provocative tweet by Greater Greater Washington, an article on Ward 8 by the Washington City Paper, and the Twitter commentary that followed - from Ward 8 residents, Council Member Marion Barry, Jr., and city journalists.
With gentrification spreading around the city, would "a new dawn for Anacostia" necessarily mean displacement for its residents? Does it have to? Read what people around the city are saying and weigh in on Twitter.
