Jeremiah Fellowship Application

Thank you for your interest in the 2011-2012 Jeremiah Fellowship! Brought to you by a partnership between Jews United for Justice in DC and Progressive Jewish Alliance in California, the Jeremiah Fellowship is an innovative program to train the next generation of Jewish social justice changemakers. Please read the information below before filling out an application.

Deadline extended! All applications must be submitted by Monday, August 22, although we encourage earlier applications.

Who should apply?

We are seeking dynamic and engaged young Jews (approximately ages 25-35) who are:

  • Already volunteer leaders or have leadership potential
  • Passionate about making our community better by learning about and acting on local justice issues
  • Actively interested in building community
  • Committed to using skills gained through the Fellowship

We are committed to the diversity of each cohort and believe that a breadth of experience adds to the richness of the program. While most of our last cohort fell into the 25-35 age range, we also had a few dynamite Fellows on either side of that range. We encourage people of all Jewish backgrounds to apply, and prior knowledge of Hebrew or Jewish texts is not required. Retreats will feature kosher food and Shabbat-friendly activities.

What am I committing to?

If you are selected for the Fellowship, you commit to:

  • Attending twice-monthly sessions on Wednesday evenings, beginning October 5 and ending in late June. A few special programs may also take place on Sundays or other weekday evenings.
  • Attending two weekend-long retreats that include a pluralistic celebration of Shabbat. The first retreat will be October 28-30 and the second retreat will be in late spring/early summer. You must attend the first retreat to participate in the Fellowship.
  • Immediately putting into action the skills you learn in the Fellowship by taking on a volunteer leadership role with JUFJ or one of our ally organizations after graduating from the Fellowship in June.
  • Practicing the grassroots fundraising skills you learn in the Fellowship by raising money to help fund the program. Each Fellow will have a goal of raising $500 during the year; JUFJ will provide training and support. Our Fellows have reached and often exceeded their fundraising goals, and tell us they learned valuable skills in the process!

Application Process:

  • Applications must be emailed to jeremiah@jufj.org by Monday, August 22.
  • If you are selected for an interview, it will be scheduled for lunchtime or late afternoon/early evening hours in late August.
  • You will be notified about the status of your application no later than the first week of September.
  • If you are selected for the Fellowship, the first meeting will take place in Dupont Circle on Wednesday evening, October 5. We will not meet on October 19 because of Shemini Atzeret/Simchat Torah. The first retreat will be October 28-30 at the Pearlstone Jewish Retreat Center.
  • Fellows will be asked to pay a $36 participation fee as a symbolic contribution toward the cost of the Fellowship, which includes nine months of trainings, guest speakers, and materials; accommodations, meals, and materials for two weekend retreats; and various special programs.
