Act Now! Protect New York's Kids from Toxic Chemicals
The past few years have brough revelations of toxic chemicals used in everyday products, even those intended for our youngest and most vulnerable: lead in jewelry and toys, bisphenol A in baby bottles and food cans, phthalates in soft plastic toys and bath products, and brominated flame retardants in nursing pillows.
Sadly, this is just the tip of the iceberg: The federal chemical management system, based on the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act, has failed to protect us from toxic chemicals linked to diseases, disorders and environmental damage. In order to protect the public health and environment, New York must reduce the exposure of children and other vulnerable populations to toxic chemicals by substituting safer alternatives when feasible.
Even before they are born, children absorb hundreds of environmental toxins which threaten their health. A study by the Environmental Working Group detected 287 chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord blood: 180 of them cause cancer, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests. Lifelong health impacts, including cancer, reproductive organ malformation, fertility problems and neurological damage, can result from exposure to certain chemicals as a fetus, infant or young child. We all pay through increased costs for health care and school systems, decreased productivity, and personal tragedies.
It's time for New York to act to identify, prioiritize, require information on, and phase out toxic chemicals from children's products. Please sign this petition and show your support!
