LAST CHANCE TO SEND IN YOUR COMMENTS ON NUCLEAR LOAN GUARANTEE PROPOSAL

DEADLINE IS TUESDAY NIGHT, SEPTEMBER 22

September 18, 2009

Thank you to everyone who already has submitted comments on the Department of Energy's outrageous proposal to increase taxpayer risk from its loan guarantee program for new nuclear reactor construction. More than 1,300 of you have sent in comment in just the past two days!

But if you have not yet sent in your comments, or have not yet forwarded the link to your friends and colleagues for them to send in comments, time is running short. This is the link to send your comments (and to send around to everyone you can think of!): http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5502/t/5846/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=2062

The comment deadline is midnight, Tuesday, September 22. So please make sure you get your comments in before then. Your comment letter will go both to the appropriate office at the Department of Energy and to President Obama. There is simply no excuse for the Obama adminstration's DOE to be bowing down like this to nuclear industry pressure and increasing the risk of taxpayer losses and utility bailouts.

And thank you also to everyone has been signing the statement on nuclear power and climate, both as organizations and individuals, and forwarding the link to your friends. A reminder that the statement, and lists of signers, can be found on the front page of our website, www.nirs.org. Keep spreading the word!

A few developments on this:

*We plan to hand-deliver the list of U.S. organizational signers along with a cover letter noting the number of individual signers, to every member of the U.S. Senate in mid-October, in conjunction with the next National Call-In Day on nuclear subsidies and the upcoming climate bill. We'll be letting you know more about the call-in day soon.

*We're working with a number of international organizations to assure the largest possible anti-nuclear presence at December's Copenhagen meetings on climate, and we'll be circulating the full list of US and organizational signers there. We're at nearly 800 organizational signers--let's get to more than 1,000 before Copenhagen!

*In a sign of increasing international interest, the statement has now been translated into Japanese and will begin circulating in Japan.

Keep up the great work folks, and especially over the next few days keep spreading the word about the loan guarantee comment opportunity and deadline. Again, the link is: http://org2.democracyinaction.org/o/5502/t/5846/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=2062

And, finally, our last e-mail didn't exactly bring in a record amount of contributions, shall we say....We don't send e-mails in order to solicit contributions, we send them for you to take action, and we appreciate that you do! But keeping up these campaigns does cost us money, so if you can help out a little with a tax-deductible contribution this week, it would be a great time to do that.

Thanks for all you do,

Michael Mariotte
