Support renewable energy; stop unwise nuclear amendments

Tomorrow, May 6, the Senate Energy Committee is expected to begin markup of a major new energy bill.

Please send the letter below to Sen. Evan Bayh, in support of amendments to encourage renewable energy and to oppose unnecessary and unwise amendments to encourage nuclear power.

Then, please call Sen. Bayh at 202-224-5623 and urge him to support the Sanders amendments to the energy bill.

Dear Senator Bayh,

I understand that Senator Sanders of Vermont intends to introduce two important amendments to the Senate energy bill on Wednesday May 6. These amendments deserve your support.

One amendment would encourage funds from the proposed Clean Energy Deployment Administration (CEDA) to be invested in those technologies that can produce the fastest and least expensive reductions in greenhouse gas emissions. The other would limit any single technology from receiving more than 20% of the financial support from CEDA.

These amendments would mark a major improvement to this proposed program. They would encourage fiscal responsibility and support for deployment of needed renewable energy technologies.

In addition, I ask you to oppose amendments that would make it impossible for environmentalists to support an energy bill. Among amendments that may be offered that merit rejection are any that would support dirty and dangerous reprocessing technologies or otherwise tamper with the administration's re-evaluation of radioactive waste policy, any that would add additional subsidies to the billions of taxpayer dollars already wasted on new nuclear reactor construction, and any that suggest nuclear power is useful in addressing the climate crisis. It is not.

Again, please vote for the Sanders amendments. They are a clear and necessary improvement.
