Keep nukes out of Senate Climate Bill!

TELL PRESIDENT OBAMA: DON’T LET THE SENATE CLIMATE BILL GET HIJACKED BY THE NUCLEAR POWER INDUSTRY!

The Senate energy bill (as yet-unnumbered) is chock full of taxpayer goodies for the nuclear power industry, including unlimited loan guarantees for new reactor construction and support for dirty, proliferation-prone reprocessing technologies.

The Senate's plan is to incorporate this energy bill into the Senate climate bill. But we need a climate bill clean energy advocates can support. If the Senate bill isn't changed, that won't happen. President Obama needs to raise his voice against nuclear industry pork-barrel politics. Please tell President Obama not to let the climate bill get hijacked by the nuclear power industry.

Dear President Obama,

I was disappointed to read in your statement on passage of the House climate bill that it would lead to “safer” nuclear power.

Actually, there was nothing in the bill that would make nuclear power “safer.” And, as you often noted in your campaign, nuclear power still faces major safety, waste and economic problems.

Even more disturbing is the overwhelming and unacceptable support for nuclear power in the Senate energy bill. For example, this bill empowers a nine-member unelected board to provide unlimited taxpayer-backed loan guarantees for construction of dangerous new nuclear reactors. It also provides support for nuclear waste reprocessing—a dirty and proliferation-prone technology—before your necessary re-evaluation of radioactive waste policy through the Waste Commission even has begun.

As a clean energy advocate, if these provisions are in the final Senate climate bill, I will have to urge my Senators to vote against it.

The nuclear industry already has received enough taxpayer subsidies; please act to ensure that all nuclear subsidies in the Senate climate bill are stripped before it is passed or incorporated into a larger climate bill.
