Tell your Senators: No taxpayer $ for nukes!

We need a strong bill to deal with the climate crisis. What we don't need are more taxpayer subsidies for the nuclear power industry. A "climate" bill that contains such subsidies would be counterproductive. Rather than helping build a sustainable energy future, it would squander money on dirty, dangerous nuclear power and "clean" coal that could be used for genuinely carbon-free technologies like solar, wind, geothermal, energy efficiency programs, and research into advanced technologies like micro-algae (did you know, for example, that Venice, Italy is currently building a 500MW power plant that will both produce micro-algae and operate on that same micro-algae?).

The letter below is aimed at "key" Senators--those whose votes will be most important at both passing a strong climate bill and at keeping nuclear power out of a strong climate bill. We need to keep the pressure on these Senators and let them know that climate and nukes are contradictory. If the climate bill contains nuclear subsidies, then the Senate should vote that bill down and try again.

Dear Senator

Our nation and planet need strong, speedy and effective action to address the climate crisis.

But nuclear power is not the answer. Nuclear power is too expensive, too slow, too dirty and too dangerous to serve as a climate solution. And producing more radioactive waste without a disposal path--as the nuclear industry would do--would simply create one more nightmarish environmental problem.

Indeed, spending money on new nuclear reactors and "clean" coal would actually make the climate situation worse, by squandering our limited resources on the least effective technologies possible. Our resources must be directed toward clean, renewable energy technologies like wind, solar, and geothermal; energy efficiency programs, and development of advanced technologies like micro-algae. If Venice, Italy can build an advanced micro-algae power plant, why can't the U.S.?

Please act to ensure that the Senate climate bill does not include taxpayer money for nuclear power. If the bill does contain such subsidies, please vote against it. We would be better off with no climate bill than one that subsidizes dangerous, counterproductive technologies like nuclear power.
