Support Obama's Supplemental Request for UN Peacekeeping

When Congress returns from recess on Monday, April 20th, they will begin to review President Obama's Supplemental spending request. Write to your legislators to let them know you are opposed to any cutting of the $836 million allocated to paying back our debt to the UN.

Please Support the UN Peacekeeping Request in Obama's Supplemental

Dear Member of Congress,

I am writing to ask you to support the U.N. Peacekeeping allocation in President Obama's Supplemental request and oppose any cutting amendments to that allocation.

I agree with President Obama that it is time to start paying back the money we owe the U.N., so that we may work with other nations to support current U.N. Peacekeeping Operations in conflict zones like Darfur and the Middle East.

This allocation will also allow the U.S. to increase funds to the the U.N. Peacekeeping Operation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and fund new missions in Chad and the Central African Republic. All of these missions have been approved by the U.S. in the U.N. Security Council. I believe that peacekeeping operations such as these protect our national security by reducing the threat of terrorism from war-torn countries. The most economical way to work towards such conflict resolution is through the U.N., as it would cost the United States eight times as much to conduct peacekeeping operations on our own.

The United States has owed millions of dollars in dues to U.N. peacekeeping for many years and that number is now approaching one billion dollars. Of the entire Supplemental Appropriations request, this money allocated to pay our dues represents only 1%.  I ask you to please stand behind President Obama's request for $836 million to reduce our debt to the U.N. and support these much-needed peacekeeping operations.

We are a great nation and must meet our obligations to the U.N.  Doing less would be financially irresponsible and would severely reduce the effectiveness of the U.N., an institution we helped build.
