Dear Senator

As a constituent concerned about the alarming rate of global warming and its harmful consequences, I urge you to support strong action to mitigate climate change. The House passed the Waxman-Markey bill in June, and while this bill takes the right step forward, it still falls well below the needed reductions to effectively curb the devastating impacts of climate change. I ask that you resist pressure to compromise further on steps that will save lives and our planet, while strengthening the U.S. economy through jobs and investment. Please make sure that the U.S. takes a firm stand in leading the world on environmental protections in the run up to the December 2009 meetings in Copenhagen to replace the Kyoto Protocol, We must demonstrate our commitment to addressing climate change, and secure a strong platform for negotiations with the international community. I urge you to support: 1.The speedy passage of the climate change bill before the December Copenhagen meetings. 2.Increasing the greenhouse gas emission reduction requirement from 4-7% to 24-40% of 1990 levels by 2020. This is the level that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has established as crucial for avoiding catastrophic changes to our environment. 3.The auction of pollution permits in order to raise money for subsidizing renewable energy and for improving energy efficiency. 4.Reducing pollution offsets and allowances given to industries. 5.Prevent the weakening of the bill with amendments driven by parochial interest group pressures. The Global Humanitarian Forum- the think tank of former U.N. Secretary-General, Kofi Anan- has found that 300,000 people die every year due to climate change, the equivalent of one Indian Ocean tsunami annually, at a cost of $125 billion annually. I urge you to join me in supporting President Obama’s assertion that “the threat from climate change is serious, it is urgent, and it is growing. Our generation's response to this challenge will be judged by history, for if we fail to meet it -- boldly, swiftly, and together -- we risk consigning future generations to an irreversible catastrophe.” The energy choices we make today will determine much about the world our children inherit, please protect their future.
