Sign the petition to deep-six "Shoot First"

Trayvon Martin of Florida, unarmed and doing nothing but walking back from a convenience store, was confronted by a "neighborhood watch" volunteer in the gated community Martin was visiting with his father. A scuffle ensued, and Martin died at the hands of a man who outweighed him by nearly 100 pounds. Because of the "Shoot First" law in Florida, police could do nothing once the killer claimed he had acted in self-defense. The killer was not even arrested. That is outrageous. And predictable. As law enforcement in Minnesota warned, hamstringing law enforcement as soon as a defendant says the words "self-defense" is an extreme violation of the rules of a civilized society. It invites vigilantism, as in this case, and makes our society less safe for all.
We urge the Florida legislature to repeal "Shoot First" immediately, and we call on the authors of the bill in Minnesota to refrain from introducing it again. The chief author in the House told the media after the Governor vetoed this horrific bill that he planned to "shove it down their throats" in the future. We demand that "Shoot First" be deep-sixed.
