MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD ONUNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS
Take Action Today
A group of state lawmakers recently introduced a bill (House Bill 1588) that would establish universal background checks for all gun sales in Washington. Currently, only licensed firearm dealers are legally required to conduct background checks. Private sellers, whether at gun shows, on the internet, or on our city streets outside a gun buyback program, do not have to perform background checks to make sure that they do not sell a weapon to someone who is prohibited by law from purchasing one. Nationally, up to 40% of gun sales occur without background checks. This so-called “gun show loophole” must be closed!
House Bill 1588 is an important first step toward making this a reality, and a wide majority of registered voters in Washington state supports universal background checks. But we must make out voices heard! House Bill 1588 is currently being reviewed by the Judiciary Committee, chaired by Representative Jamie Pedersen (D-43). As of February 5, 2013, the bill has 38 sponsors, including several Republicans, but its passage is far from certain. This bill has been targeted by the NRA for defeat, making it all the more important that the 87% of Washington voters who support universal background checks contact the members of the House Judiciary Committee today. This committee will decide whether the bill moves forward in the House or not.
