MEDFORD BLM TO LOG NEAR POPULAR GRIZZLY PEAK TRAILHEAD

If you are a hammer, every problem looks like a nail, and if you're the BLM, every forest looks like lumber. In the case of the "Rio Climax" timber sale on the Medford BLM's Ashland Resource Area, the BLM is targeting a number of older forest stands in the Little Butte Creek Watershed for logging -including a complex late-successional stand near the Grizzly Creek trailhead.

The Little Butte Creek watershed is widely recognized as a crucial salmon and steelhead bearing tributary to the Rogue River. Unfortunately the aquatic and forest values of the watershed have been severely diminished by extensive logging and road construction over the years.

Conservationists had hoped that the BLM would take this opportunity to thin previously logged plantations and small-trees rather than repeating the mistakes  of the past by logging the remaining older stands and punching in more logging roads into this at-risk watershed.
