Ban the sale, trade and possession of shark fins

Attention: Mayor Naheed Nenshi and Calgary City Council

Dear Mayor and Council,

I am writing to urge you to make Calgary a national leader in wildlife protection by passing a bylaw to ban shark fins.

As you already know, shark populations are disappearing at an alarming rate due to the global demand for shark fin soup. To maximize profits by saving room on their boats, fishermen often cut the valuable fins from living sharks and then throw the rest of the animal back into the ocean, leaving them to die slowly and painfully. Because sharks are at the top of the food chain, what happens to them affects entire ocean ecosystems, and, in turn, we are all affected.

The best way to confront this problem is to pass the proposed shark fin ban bylaw. Doing so will ensure that no one in our city is contributing to this cruelty and ecological destruction. It will also send a strong message to the federal government that Calgary wants to see a federal shark fin trade ban enacted.

I congratulate you and the other members of Council for taking action to protect sharks. You have my full support and encouragement in passing the proposed shark fin ban into law this coming Monday.
