Help protect the Eco Echo Outaouais Environmental Campus from being paved over by their own municipality for the sake of building a light industrial park. Eco Echo is an ongoing community project that has the potential for transforming the gateway to the Gatineau Park at Wakefield. They offer visitors and locals inspirational environmental programs, workshops and cultural activities in a 400-seat outdoor amphitheatre in an old marble quarry. Eco Echo is taking a stand to preserve all that we love about the Gatineau. This is in jeopardy and needs your urgent support. I want to share my concerns about Mayor Robert Bussiere’s proposal to expropriate private land to create an industrial park at the entrance to Wakefield adjacent to Highway 105.  I am deeply concerned by the implications of a municipality taking private land to benefit commercial interests and the negative social and economic impacts it will have on our region and community.

With no explanation or justification, the proposed project seeks to convert 100 acres of land into a conventional industrial park. The Mayor insists his proposed project depends upon expropriating 60 acres that have been home to the Outaouais Environmental Campus Eco Echo (www.ecoecho.ca) since April 2008.

I believe the Eco Echo project and the many green businesses, eco-tourism and cultural assets it has begun attracting to the region will be jeopardized by the expropriation.  The opportunity to create a sustainable and viable local economy that reflects the unique character of Wakefield and La Pêche will be lost and the fabric of our community irreparably damaged.

I ask that you urgently consider this matter and ensure that adequate consideration is being given to both the long term economic and social benefits of the region by supporting Eco Echo as an expression of the community’s values and priorities. I also ask for your sincere consideration of partnering with Eco Echo to ensure this unique opportunity is properly supported and developed.
