When the government altered the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA) this summer, it assured Canadians it remained committed to CEAA's effectiveness and environmental oversight more generally.

Also this summer, the B.C. government granted Taseko Mines a 25-year mining lease. Taseko now plans to dig an open-pit mine in central B.C. which would drain Fish Lake and turn it into a tailings pond.

Re: The Fish Lake mine

Dear Prime Minister Harper,

This summer, Royal Assent was granted to Budget Bill C-9. Within this omnibus bill were significant changes to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act (CEAA). While many groups and individuals expressed alarm at these changes, your government assured Canadians it was committed to a strong and effective CEAA.

The first test of your government's resolve to support the environmental assessment is awaiting a cabinet decision right now.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency reported that the mine would have significant adverse effects on the environment - including to fish stocks and grizzly populations - and on First Nations rights and title.

I am depending on you and your colleagues to support the environmental assessment process and reject the Fish Lake mine project in the interest of the environment and future generations.
