Reinstate ecoENERGY and Stop Asbestos Subsidies!

Natural Resources Canada has cut the immensely popular and environmentally beneficial ecoENERGY Retrofit program, and at the same time giving the asbestos lobby another $250,000 toward promoting the use of this deadly product in developing nations!

ecoENERGY Retrofit Program: provides homeowners with financial incentives and support in upgrading the energy efficiency of buildings across Canada.

Asbestos: one of the most documented workplace hazards in Canada and the source of many health problems in the developing world.

Is this a fair tradeoff?!?

I am writing to express my disappointment at the recent and sudden cancellation of the ecoENERGY Retrofit – Homes program of Natural Resources Canada.  As well, I am writing to voice my concern with your department subsidizing the asbestos industry and spreading this known hazardous and deadly material internationally.

I was shocked to hear you were giving the asbestos lobby group a $250,000 cheque to help sell a harmful product to developing countries. Thousands of Canadians are still suffering and dying from asbestos induced diseases, one of the most documented workplace health hazards in Canada. The evidence is clear that no country, including Canada, has succeeded in handling asbestos safely. In  developing countries, the situation is even worse, since there is virtually no enforcement of the so-called “safe use” protocols.

Meanwhile, the ecoENERGY program is a cost effective way of helping to make thousands of Canadian homes more energy efficient.  This program would help to curb climate change and save money on my future utility bills.

How can you justify cancelling the ecoEnergy program which not only makes homes more efficient, but also stimulates local economies, while at the same time, your department continues to subsidize the asbestos industry?

I hope you will reconsider increasing the federal government’s investment in the ecoENERGY program and please stop funding the deadly asbestos industry!
