Reform our Broken Immigration Laws

With a new Congress and a new President, we have an opportunity to end the gridlock of the last several years, and fix our broken immigration system. The problems cause by lack of federal leadership in reforming our immigration laws become more serious every day. Send the letter below to your Representative.

I am writing to urge you and your colleagues in Congress to fix our broken immigration system in this term.

The urgency for reforming our immigration laws cannot be overstated. Over the last eight years, immigrants and their families, employers and workers alike, have suffered from our nation’s inability to find common ground on the issue of immigration reform.

Indiscriminate immigration raids have caused trauma and hardship for thousands of individuals. Such raids separate families, destroy communities, and threaten the basic rights of immigrants and U.S. citizens alike.

A new and vast detention system has resulted in violations of basic due process rights, the deaths of immigrants - including legal permanent residents - in detention, and endanger the basic civil liberties of all Americans.

A patchwork of state and local immigration enforcement initiatives has only served to damage trust among immigrant communities and law enforcement officials and undermine public safety.

The rights of workers have also been undermined by enforcement strategies that fail to take into account labor laws and the exploitation of undocumented workers.

With few legal options to come to our country to work, migrants desperate for a better life continue to meet their deaths at our borders.

With a new President and a new Congress, now is the time to turn the page on the gridlock in Washington and the broken status quo.  We need immigration reform that will provide a way for undocumented immigrants to stay and work legally, that will speed up the reunification of families, that will provide more legal options for workers to enter the country legally, and that will protect the rights of immigrant and native workers alike.
