Move 'em to support Earned Sick Days
Last week, Assemblywoman Lampitt introduced legislation so that New Jersey workers could earn paid sick days.
Its a simple concept -- when a worker gets sick, they wouldn't have to worry about losing a day's pay or even their job, they could stay home to get well!
But this important, basic legislation does not yet have any cosponsors in the New Jersey State Assembly.
Take action by entering your information below to move your State Assemblymember to cosponsor this important bill (A-4125) to provide earned sick days to all New Jersey workers!

Let's Level the Playing Field
Hurricane Sandy caused billions of dollars of property damage; damage to cars, to homes, and to small businesses. If you sustained damage, hopefully you had insurance to cover the damage. You've been faithfully paying your premiums every month for years, perhaps decades, and you need your insurance will cover what it's supposed to. But what if your insurance company isn't there for you? What if your insurance company unreasonably denies or delays payments that you are owed? What can you do?
Well, there is a bill moving through the NJ State Legislature that would help make sure that your insurance company pays what it owes you. And on Monday, March 4, this bill S2460 "The Consumer Protection Act of 2012" will be up in the Senate Commerce Committee. We need to make sure this bill becomes law and levels the playing field for honest people who just want their insurance companies to be there when they need them.
Please take a moment to contact Senator Nia Gill, chair of the Senate Commerce Committee and ask her to support S2460 "The Consumer Protection Act of 2012" on Monday.

It should be in your hands
Last week Governor Christie unfairly vetoed legislation to raise New Jersey's minimum wage to $8.50/hour.
Christie instead offered to raise the minimum wage just 25¢ an hour this year, with three more 25¢ increases over three years, eventually raising the wage to $8.25 by 2015.
REALLY!?
Such a tightfisted increase in workers' wages would immediately be gobbled up by ever increasing costs of living and would do nothing to help families struggling to make ends meet. New Jersey’s minimum wage workers haven’t had an increase since 2009. This is unacceptable, especially in a state that has one of the highest costs of living. It's time to stop with the political back & forth and let YOU, the New Jersey voter, decide the matter!
This Thursday, the New Jersey State Senate will vote on a resolution that does just that; places a constitutional amendment on the 2013 fall election ballot.
Enter your zip code below to send an email to your Senator to let them know that you support taking the minimum wage issue to the voters in the fall.
Tell them that you support amending the constitution to include indexing as a way to help guarantee New Jersey workers and New Jersey businesses more incremental, consistent increases. Indexing is one of most effective measures against inflation and without it the real value of New Jersey’s minimum wage will continue to decline each year as the cost of basic goods rise.
New Jersey should join the other 10 states that pay more than the federal minimum wage of $7.25/hour and make annual adjustments when cost of living goes up. Of those states, 4 have written annual increases into their constitutions. And guess what!? Their state economies are thriving and unemployment has not risen.
Enter your information below to tell your Senator that it's time to put the issue of a meaningful minimum wage in your hands!

A Minimum Wage Increase that Matters
Currently at $7.25 an hour, a higher minimum wage is desperately needed to help New Jersey’s working families and boost our economy. But unless the minimum wage is also adjusted annually based on cost of living increases (also called indexing), many households will not be able to make ends meet.
Legislation that does just that is now sitting on Governor Christie’s desk. The bill (A2162) will raise the wage to $8.50 and make annual adjustments based on increases in consumer prices. But Governor Christie has said that he opposes these annual adjustments of the minimum wage despite it being a key protection to prevent the minimum wage from continuing to erode.
Will you contact the Governor today and urge him to sign the bill with indexing? Just enter your information below to send the Governor an email. You can also call his office (609-292-6000) and leave a message.
I don’t have to tell you that a minimum wage increase is much needed for families trying to make ends meet. Right now, a full-time minimum wage worker only earns $15,080 a year--$3,000 below the poverty line for a family of three! Minimum wage should be indexed annually to maintain its purchasing power for families that are facing falling below the poverty line.
But the benefits of raising the minimum wage don’t end with NJ’s 40,000 minimum wage workers; thousands of additional low wage workers would also likely receive a boost in pay. And, studies have shown that even during hard times, the minimum wage is good for the economy. For every $1 increase in the hourly minimum wage, a family will spend $2,800 more a year that goes right back into the economy.
Please fill out your information below to send an email and make a 30 second call to Governor Christie now to let him know that you strongly support raising the minimum wage with indexing.Dial 609-292-6000 and that the operator that your are calling to ask Governor Christie to sign A2162, to raise the minimum wage with indexing. Enter your information below and also send Governor Christie an email.

Women Support Earned Sick Days
We the undersigned, call on our New Jersey State elected officials to support legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Lampitt (A2145) and Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (S2866), to guarantee a minimum standard of earned paid sick days for all workers. No one should have to choose between caring for themselves and loved ones and getting a paycheck! Everyone benefits when workers are able to balance job obligations and family needs. Giving workers financial security by allowing them to earn paid leave to deal with their own illness, a child's illness, or a parent's recovery from a stroke not only improves outcomes for children and families, but also raises worker morale and productivity.
Our current workplace policies still reflect the 20th century notion of a sole male breadwinner and a full-time female caregiver. Today, the majority of moms are working fulltime jobs, and many are working more than fulltime. Without workplace standards and supports that reflect the needs of the current workforce, workers, especially working women, cannot adequately fulfill both their caregiving and job responsibilities.
The need for earned paid sick days is especially acute for low-wage workers, the majority of whom are women, who frequently lack benefits afforded higher income workers. In New Jersey, 1.2 million private sector employees lack paid sick days, including 72% of childcare workers and 76% of food service workers. Nationally, nearly 4 in 10 working women do not have access to paid sick days, and women-dominated industries are the least likely to have paid sick leave.
As primary caregivers for their family and frequently lacking access to the paid sick day benefit, women are uniquely positioned to champion all workers’ right to earned sick days. We are New Jersey woman whom support a minimum standard of earned sick and safe days for all New Jersey workers. Please enter your information below, it is very helpful if you include an organization or title when you sign. -
Give New Jersey's working families a reason to really give thanks!
This Thanksgiving week, New Jersey’s leaders should embrace a surefire way to give the state’s working families something to truly be thankful for: a strong minimum wage increase that can help lift these struggling families out of poverty.
New Jersey's minimum wage is stuck in the past.
In the 1950’s you could afford to pay rent after about just 56 hours working minimum wage. The minimum wage was the living wage it was meant to be, ensuring people who worked hard and played by the rules could get ahead. Today a minimum wage worker has to work 109 hours to pay an average rent and in high cost of living areas, they have to work upwards of 155 hours. Something must be done to let hard working people work their way out of poverty.
Enter your zip code below to email your elected officials and urge them to pass strong minimum wage legislation with future increases tied to the real world costs of living.
The New Jersey Legislature is considering bills to raise the minimum wage and adjust it yearly for inflation so that working people don't see their "real" income continue to decrease, as it has for the last four decades.
But Governor Christie said that he opposes annual adjustments of the minimum wage to inflation - a key protection to prevent the minimum wage from eroding over time. He wants the Legislature to put through a weak minimum wage that will do little to let low wage earners work their way out of poverty.
Please send a strong message to your state legislators to support a strong minimum wage and to reject the Governor's position that doesn't go far enough to help low wage workers get ahead.
Full-time minimum wage workers make nearly $3,000 below the poverty line for a family of three, forcing working families to depend on food stamps and other public benefits. Connecting minimum wage to ever-increasing expenses for food, housing, utilities and transportation will help families begin to lift themselves out of poverty.
Email to your elected official now and let them know that you support raising the minimum wage and connecting it to costs of living going forward.
Thanks for taking action!

Tell Governor Christie to hold for-profit hospitals accountable
Right now in New Jersey for-profit hospitals and non-profit hospitals play by different rules. While non-profit hospitals are required to report revenue, expenditures, salaries, and operating costs, for-profit hospitals aren't even required to report the compensation of their top executives.
We believe this is unfair and that for-profit hospitals should be held to the same standards as their non-profit brethren. For-profit hospitals draw on the very same public sources of funding - Medicare, Medicaid, Charity Care, FamilyCare - to provide care as our non-profit hospitals, with the advantage of being able to raise private capital as well. At the very least they should be required to do business out in the open like their non-profit counterparts.
As more and more non-profit hospitals are sold to for-profit entities, it is more important than ever to ensure that the public has an accurate picture of how these companies do business.
That's why we're supporting S782, The Hospital Disclosure and Public Resource Protection Act. S782 will help taxpayers and communities around the state hold for-profit hospitals accountable by asking them to disclose the same information as non-profit entities.
S782 is currently sitting on Governor Christie's desk and we need your help to make sure he signs it. Take a moment to call 609-292-6000 and tell Governor Christie that he should sign S782 and support taxpayer accountability.
With more and more for-profit companies coming into New Jersey to do business, we need to make sure they can't eliminate vital services and funnel taxpayer money to investors with no recourse. We need to stand up for patients, not profits.
Please call Gov. Christie now and ask him to sign S782: 609-292-6000

Please call Senator Menendez at 973-645-3030 to say "Thank you for standing up for the 98%!"
When you've done that, please call Senator Lautenberg at 888-398-1642 to say "Thank you voting to ensure the richest 2% pay their fair share!"
New Jersey is lucky to have not one, but two Senators who did the right thing yesterday!

Vote Yes for Fairness!
Both houses of the State Legislature are voting today to reinstate the Millionaire's Tax - which Governor Christie cut two years ago. Reinstating this tax on the 16,000 New Jerseyans making more than $1,000,000 is simply the right thing to do. Please take the time to email your Legislators and tell them to support the plan to make millionaires pay their fair share.

Tell your Legislator to Stand up to Chris Christie:
Governor Christie’s proposed budget includes reckless tax cuts that New Jersey just can’t afford. We’ve already seen too many cuts to our schools, our police and fire services, and our communities. Now Governor Christie is pushing unaffordable tax cuts that will mean huge budget shortfalls in the future.
Tell your legislator to stand up for a balanced budget that protects our schools and our communities. Call 888-744-0122 now.
You will be prompted to enter your zip code to be connected to your legislator’s office. Remember to tell them your name and what town you live in, and then tell them to stand up for a responsible, balanced budget that protects our schools and our communities—without leading our state to bankruptcy. Tell them that you oppose Christie’s reckless cuts.

Fight Governor Christie's budget and the cuts to the Lead-safe NJ Program
Did you know that 30% of New Jersey homes were built before 1950 when lead based paints were widely used? Did you also know that Governor Christie abruptly cut funding for New Jersey's successful lead abatement program in his budget for next year?
He did, and earlier today the Senate Community and Urban Affairs committee held a hearing to discuss those cuts.
A doctor testified about how children with lead poisoning may be forced to go back into the homes that poisoned them because there is no more money for relocation. A grandmother testified about her grand-son who had lead poisoning, and how there was no more funding to abate the home in which he lived.
Our Executive Director said it best: Governor Christie's cuts to the Lead-safe NJ program are reckless and will hurt New Jersey's children. Lead poisoning can lead to lower IQs and brain damage. Leaving our children at risk will only result in ten-fold costs for the state's future in the form of lost productivity and special needs.
What's even worse is that instead of funding the Lead-safe NJ program, Governor Christie wants to give a tax-cut that would put over $7,000 into the pocket of the average millionaire. If you agree that we should put the safety of our children before a tax cut for millionaires, please sign this petition.

Tell Governor Christie to Sign the Minimum Wage Increase
Governor Christie recently told an audience at a local Town Hall Meeting that he would veto the bill to raise the minimum wage by $1.25 to $8.50 per hour.
He said what? Raising the minimum wage is a win-win situation – it will help New Jersey’s working families and boost our economy.
Will you call the Governor today and urge him to sign the bill when it hits his desk? Just enter your information below and you can send the Governor an email or call his office and leave a message.
I don’t have to tell you that a minimum wage increase is much needed for families trying to make ends meet. Right now, a full-time minimum wage worker only earns $14,500 a year--$3,000 below the poverty line for a family of three!
But the benefits of raising the minimum wage don’t end with NJ’s 40,000 minimum wage workers, thousands of additional low wage workers would also likely receive a boost in pay. Protect New Jersey's Foreclosure Money, Say NO to Governor Christie's Budget
Earlier this year the US Attorney General reached a settlement with the big Wall Street banks that asks them to pony-up for the damage that led to the recession. Out of that deal, New Jersey is slated to get $75 million to help those hit hardest -- the people who are in danger of being put out of their homes by foreclosure.
But in Governor Christie's budget proposal for next year, that $75 million doesn't get to the people who need it. Instead, it's used to plug the hole in the budget created by the Governor's reckless tax cut proposal.
That's $75 million that could help people stay in their homes that is being used instead to cut taxes for the rich.
Please sign this petition asking the New Jersey Legislature to protect the foreclosure money, and say NO to Governor Christie's budget.

Let's Raise the Minimum Wage in New Jersey! Tell your Assemblymember to vote YES on A-2162
The NJ Assembly is scheduled to vote this Thursday, May 24, on a bill to raise NJ minimum wage to $8.50 an hour.
An increase in NJ's minimum wage would directly benefit roughly 40,000 workers currently earning only $7.25/hour. Thousands of additional low wage workers are also likely to receive a boost in pay. With increasing costs of living, we need to make sure these workers and their families are earning enough to make ends meet.
But the benefits of raising the minimum wage don’t stop there. Studies have shown that for every $ 1 increase in the hourly minimum wage, a family will spend $2,800 more a year that goes right back into the economy. This additional economic stimulus would lead to the creation of new full-time jobs.
And really, raising the minimum wage to $8.50 needs to happen to simply keep up with inflation. If New Jersey's 1968 minimum wage of $1.40 had increased at the rate of inflation, it would be $9.75 today!
Let your Assemblymember know that raising the minimum wage to $8.50 an hour is a win-win for all New Jersey.
Enter your zip code below for the phone number and email form to contact your Assemblymember.

Say NO to the Christie Budget
Unemployment is hovering around 9%. Property taxes have risen 20% since Governor Christie has been in office. April revenues are less than expected. And yet, despite those facts, Governor Christie is calling for a budget that could hurt the middle-class while protecting tax cuts for millionaires.
With all the problems New Jersey is facing -- stagnant unemployment, rising property taxes, gas prices that are out-of-control -- we need a plan that provides relief to the middle-class by restoring budget cuts to health care and education, helps working-families stay above water, and asks everyone to pay their fair share, not a plan that creates a budget deficit while giving tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires.
That's why we ask you to sign this petition to say NO to the Christie Budget. We should be investing in the future, not in political careers.

Tell Governor Christie to Sign the NJ Health Benefit Exchange Act
Right now, sitting on Governor Christie's desk is a bill that could revolutionize the way we purchase health insurance in New Jersey. "The New Jersey Health Benefit Exchange Act," passed by both houses in the Legislature, will make the health insurance system actually work for consumers by increasing choice, value, and quality, and requiring insurance companies to compete for your business. It will give individual consumers the ability to pool together their buying power -- like large companies -- and get better rates and higher quality coverage.
But we need your help. Governor Christie is undecided on whether or not he will sign the bill. We need you to contact his office and say, "New Jersey Consumers need better health insurance options! Sign S2135/A3186, the NJ Health Benefit Exchange Act."
The Governor's Office phone number is 609-292-6000 to contact by phone.

Support the New Jersey Health Benefit Exchange
The New Jersey Legislature is about to vote on a bill that would create a competitive health insurance marketplace in New Jersey -- an Exchange. It will help individuals and small businesses by allowing them to pool together their buying power to get better rates on insurance. The Business and Insurance lobbies, however, are stepping up their opposition in advance of the vote on Thursday.
They want a marketplace where insurance companies only have to meet minimum standards in order to offer insurance.
It's time we stand up to business and insurance lobbyists and say, "when it comes to our health care, minimum standards are unacceptable!"
As friends and allies of NJ Citizen Action, we ask that you use the form below to contact your Legislators and tell them to Vote YES on The New Jersey Health Benefit Exchange Act."
The New Jersey Health Benefit Exchange Act will help control costs, improve our health, and make us more competitive.

This PETITION will go to the Offices of the State Attorney General and Health & Senior Services Commissioner:
We the undersigned residents of Hudson County are concerned about the sale of Christ Hospital to Prime Healthcare Services, a for-profit, CA hospital chain. We ask that you:- Carefully scrutinize this sale, including the process by which Prime Healthcare Services was chosen as the buyer without considering potential non-profit buyers and without seeking community input;
- Consider Prime Health Care's questionable patient care and billing practices, which are currently under investigation; and
- Ensure that any sale agreement protects the community's access to a full-service, acute care hospital and protects the working conditions and rights of the hospital's employees
Please help us protect our community — help us save Christ Hospital.

Urge NJ Senate to "Vote NO" on Anti-Consumer Give Away to Telecommunication Giants
Join New Jersey Citizen Action (NJCA) to speak out against the so-called Market Competition and Consumer Choice Act, which would wipe out consumer protections for both basic cable and single landline telephone consumers and represents a significant shift in state policy. On February 17, 2011 the Assembly passed its onerous version of the legislation (A3766) but the companion bill was held without being voted on in the Senate (S2664). Now it is up to all of us to stop this bill once and for all in the Senate. Taxpayers and their consumer protections will be dramatically affected by this deregulation and your Senators need to hear from you.
This radical deregulation bill is being railroaded through the Assembly and Senate and will wipe out current consumer protections that require telephone and cable companies to provide safe, adequate and proper service and could eliminate such consumer protections as credits for service outages and correction of billing errors and even the requirement to transmit a picture on your screen! Particularly among low or fixed income individuals – including senior citizens and those with disabilities – these basic phone and cable plans act as a life line. Calling doctors or pharmacies, reaching out to loved ones for support, contacting a hospital in an emergency – these allow us to retain our independence and stay connected to the world.
Don’t let the deregulation of basic services and the greed of large telecommunications companies trump the basic consumer protections we depend on!

Override the Governor's Veto — Restore FamilyCare & Family Planning
Governor Christie has vetoed two bills that would have restored funding for parent enrollment in NJ FamilyCare (S2134/A3020) and full funding for women's health and family planning (S2139/A3018).
We cannot allow the Governor to balance the budget by sacrificing the health of New Jersey. Especially in these difficult economic times, when the needs of our state's families are increasing — we cannot and should not eliminate these vital health care programs. Please write your state legislators today and tell them to override the Governor's veto and restore funding to NJ FamilyCare and Family Planning!

Save New Jersey's Civil Service
Civil service was first enacted in 1908 in the midst of huge government corruption scandals. The Civil Service replaced a personnel system based on spoils, patronage and corruption with one based on the principles of merit, fitness and testing to determine that government jobs go to those qualified to do the work. The original civil service principles of merit and fitness were considered so important to the promotion of good government that 40 years later, in 1947, the system was made part of the modern NJ Constitution.
The New Jersey Civil Service System has worked to give everyone an equal opportunity to serve the public. This system has guaranteed fair access to important jobs based on experience and expertise, not political connections. The Civil Service has offered thousands, including women and minorities, a fair shake into the middle class.
We can't turn our economic future and the health and safety of our communities over to political corruption. Save New Jersey's Civil Service!

Tell Governor Christie — No Legal Action Against National Health Reform
NJ Governor Chris Christie is considering legal action to block enactment of national health care reform!
Attorneys general in 14 states have already filed lawsuits challenging the constitutionality of national health reform. We must OPPOSE any legal, legislative or other action by the Governor to block implementation of this historic legislation.
While not a perfect piece of legislation, there is much in the reform package that will greatly benefit New Jersey’s taxpayers, uninsured and insured residents, small business owners, women, children and senior citizens. Legal experts across the country have verified that reform is 100 percent legally and constitutionally sound.
Federal health reform will expand health coverage to 32 million people, including over 859,000 New Jerseyans, stop insurance company abuses, strengthen Medicaid and Medicare, close the Medicaid Part D donut hole for 227,000 thousand of NJ senior citizens and give all of us the security and peace of mind that if you lose your job, you will still have affordable health care.
For more information about how federal reform will benefit New Jersey go to: http://www.njforhealthcare.org/national.html
