Cut Funding for the National Animal Identification System

The Senate is expected to consider the Senate Agriculture Appropriations bill as soon as Wednesday evening. Unfortunately, the bill still has over $14 million allocated for NAIS.

Senator Tester will introduce an amendment to cut that funding in half.

Call or email your Senators today and ask them to support the Tester Amendment to cut NAIS funding.

What you can say when you call

  • I am calling to urge you to support the Tester Amendment to decrease the funding of Animal ID (NAIS) in the Appropriations Bill when it comes to the floor. Although we had hoped that all funding would have been cut in the bill, this is an important first step to stopping funding in the conference committee. Will you support Tester's amendment to cut the NAIS funding?"

It's easy to email your Senators and find out their telephone numbers. Just enter your zip code below.

Background
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been working for over five years to implement NAIS. NAIS is designed to identify and track each and every individual livestock and poultry animal owned by family farm producers or hobby farmer across the country.

NAIS does nothing to serve as a food safety issue for consumers or a disease prevention system for producers, but costs the taxpayers millions of dollars for nothing in return.

The farmers and ranchers affected this program have added up the costs. They know that USDA has set up an expensive, centralized system that duplicates and even overrides animal health programs that already work—while doing nothing to stop disease outbreaks or inform consumers.

It is time to stop wasteful spending for a system that won’t work.
