Tell Our Leaders to Put People First in the FY11 Budget

The Commonwealth faces challenging economic times, and now, more than ever, we need the vital safety net that community-based programs provide to our most vulnerable citizens. And now, more than ever, we need strong leadership from the Governor and our legislators to make sure funding for those programs is protected.

We, the undersigned, urgently request that Governor Deval Patrick, Senate President Therese Murray and Speaker of the House Robert DeLeo put People First! as they develop the state budget for FY '11. In this perilous time for so many residents, we call on you to renew the promise that people are first. Any dollars tied up in any obsolete, duplicative or nonproductive administrative systems, structures or mandates -- anywhere in government -- should be eliminated before eliminating funding that directly impacts the lives of those in need of essential state services.

My rent went up during the last year, but no raise, my home heating bill went up, but no raise. taking money from disabled people will surely put them back on the street. An example of this is myself and a client named Ian single-handedly pulled at least 700 pounds of trash off of the bike path this fall from Amherst, all the way through Hadley, Northampton and downtown Florence.
