Push Senate to DREAM

Last week the House took a historic and courageous action and voted to pass the urgently needed Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act. However, the Senate is stalled because there is an insufficient number of senators willing to permit a vote on the DREAM (S3992).

There are several points of concern in the legislation that specifically impact Latinas, including that for 10 years while in conditional nonimmigrant status, DREAMers will be ineligible for any income-based help from the government to purchase affordable health insurance in the Exchange. However, NLIRH supports the DREAM Act because we see this bill as a critical first step towards advancing comprehensive immigration reform.

We need you to urge your Senator to support the DREAM Act.

Educational attainment is one way that Latinas can have access to information, resources and services that will help them make informed and autonomous decisions. This bill, in addition to providing a much-needed route to lawful citizenship to the country many immigrant young people call home, would give students the opportunity to be eligible for federal financial aid, currently an insurmountable barrier for many undocumented immigrants trying to go to college.
