Protect Health Care Reform

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the landmark health care reform legislation passed in March of last year, is under attack.

The new leadership in Congress has made it a priority to repeal this legislation and undo much of the progress that was secured with the bill’s passage.  The Affordable Care Act included a number of provisions that would greatly benefit Latinas, including:

►Expansion of Medicaid to 133% of the poverty line;

$11 billion in funding for Community Health Centers: A critical source of care for Latinas and our families;

Women’s Health Amendment: Guarantees women’s preventive services such as mammograms and pap smears will be provided free of cost under all health insurance plans.

The law is not perfect – undocumented immigrants are excluded from the reforms, and it included some of the most draconian abortion restrictions in decades.  However, advocates are working on ameliorating these provisions, and NLIRH believes that it would be a mistake to repeal the legislation.

We need you to urge your Representative to vote against any effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Latinas are uninsured at higher rates than women of any other ethnic group, and we cannot afford to lose the progress we have made so far.
