Demand Justice for Immigrant Women:Halt Secure Communities and 287(g)

We believe that strong families are the foundation of successful communities and our families come in all types and sizes. Maintaining immigrant women’s dignity is critical to maintaining these connections. Rhetorical attacks dictate the immigration debate, and are the basis for harsh and unjust immigration policies, such as 287(g) and Secure Communities, policies that impede progress on the health, education, and well-being of immigrant families.

Dear Secretary Napolitano,

We champion policies that improve the health, education and well-being of immigrant families and women. Programs such as 287(g) and Secure Communities impede progress in these areas. Recently proposed improvements to Secure Communities do not go far enough in rebuilding the trust that has been lost between survivors of domestic violence/sexual assault and local law enforcement. Please consider moving with us toward justice for immigrant women. Please halt the 287(g) and Secure Communities programs until the DHS Inspector General completes a comprehensive review of the programs and significant reforms can be made. In its place create family-friendly immigration polices that take into account the fact that immigrant women are the backbone of our communities.
