ACT NOW: Limited Service Pregnancy Center Legislation

Hundreds of pro-choice activists traveled to Olympia for our Reproductive Health and Rights Lobby Day on Monday.  They met with their legislators and urged them to support SB 6452 (and companion bill HB 2837), our commonsense legislation to improve accuracy, transparency and privacy at limited service pregnancy centers (also known as “crisis pregnancy centers”).

And now we have just a few days to make sure this bill doesn't get stuck at the committee level.  Contact your legislators right now and let them know that Washington's pro-choice majority supports SB 6452.

Why do we need this bill? Limited service pregnancy centers offer free pregnancy tests, "pregnancy options counseling," and sometimes ultrasound imaging.  They are opposed to abortion and most forms of birth control, and most provide minimal or no medical care.
 
Women go to these centers for medical care and unbiased pregnancy options counseling.  Instead, they often get false or misleading information about reproductive health care, their medical records are withheld, and they are denied needed referrals for reproductive health care.  There are at least 46 limited service pregnancy centers operating in Washington State, in 21 counties and 33 legislative districts.

What does this bill do? This legislation will bring in standards for medical accuracy, establish patient privacy safeguards and require disclosure to patients about which services are offered and which are not. The bill includes requirements that a limited service pregnancy center disclose that the center does not provide service or referrals for abortion or comprehensive birth control and that the information provided by the centers be scientifically and medically accurate.
