Stand Up for Safe Clinics!

The tragic assassination of Dr. George Tiller by an anti-choice extremist is a wake-up call that more needs to be done to protect women’s health care providers and their patients.

The federal Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, passed in 1994, makes it illegal to intentionally use force or threaten force to intimidate or interfere with individuals obtaining or providing reproductive health care services. In 1998, the Justice Department established the National Task Force on Violence Against Health Care Providers to commit the Department to enforce FACE and to work with local jurisdictions to keep clinics safe, but became virtually dormant during the Bush Administration.

Now, 15 years after the passage of FACE, Dr. Tiller's murder has illustrated the urgent need for an active task force that will make sure the law is fully enforced. Women everywhere need safe access to reproductive health care, and doctors should not fear for their lives by helping them.

Send a message to the White House and urge President Obama to empower the National Task Force to fully enforce the FACE Act. We cannot allow anti-choice extremists to terrorize health care providers and the women they serve.

Dear Mr. President,

In the wake of the tragedy of Dr. Tiller’s assassination, there is an urgent need for an active task force that will make sure the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act is fully enforced. Women everywhere need safe access to reproductive health care, and doctors should not fear for their lives by helping women get the medical care they need. We can no longer afford to avoid confronting those who have a history of suspicious or threatening activity towards a health facility. I am writing to urge you to revitalize the National Task Force on Violence Against Health Care Providers to help prevent further acts of violence against health care providers like Dr. Tiller, whose life work enabled women to access their right to choose. Dr. Tiller saved the lives and dreams of many women who had no where else to turn. Please work with the Justice Department and demand active federal support and protection for women’s health clinics. We cannot allow anti-choice extremists to terrorize health care providers and the women they serve. Thank you for being a strong advocate for women’s reproductive freedom. Sincerely,
