Tell Your Representative to Participate in Child Nutrition Efforts

 Tell your Member of Congress to sign on to the current Dear Colleague letter from Representatives Jim McGovern and Jo Ann Emerson in support of Child Nutrition Reauthorization!

Background

Representatives Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Jo Ann Emerson (R-MO) are currently asking for support from fellow Members of Congress for Child Nutrition Reauthorization.  If passed and fully funded the bill would put $10 billion over 10 years towards child nutrition programs, including:

  • the National School Lunch Program;
  • summer food programs, and;
  • Supplemental Aid for Women, Infants and Children (the WIC program).

The current Dear Colleague letter asks for support in finding funding sources for the bill.  So far, Congress has found $4.5 billion of the $10 billion needed to allow more access to the programs (making it easier for qualifying families to get what they need) and higher nutritional value in meals provided.  Without finding funding sources before voting, it will be difficult to pass the bill as needed.

Faith Reflection

This year the USDA released a report which found that each and every congressional district in the U.S. is home to families who don't have stable access to adequate food.  Such widespread need means that each of us is, quite literally, the neighbor of a family or child who regularly experiences hunger.

Urging support from our elected officials directly connects us to meeting the needs of our neighbors who are most vulnerable.

Action

Tell your Member of Congress to sign on to the Dear Colleague letter from Members of Congress Jim McGovern and Jo Ann Emerson!
